The town of Alamogordo, New Mexico was founded in 1898 and with the advent of the railroad workers, health-seekers and those seeing an opportunity to grow with the new town, Alamogordo had a flourishing, if not booming beginning.

As time went by, the Masons in town gradually became aware that other men in town were also Masons, coming from many States of the Union, as well as Canada, and at least one Mason from Scotland. When the Brethren realized that there were a number of Masons in the area, interest in forming a Masonic Lodge soon developed. Robert White, a member of Doric Lodge # 233 in Ontario, Canada, seemed to be the driving force in the organization of the new Lodge.

On April 4, 1900, a group of Masons met in a adobe building on the West side of Frank Stewart's livery stable to discuss the organizing of a new Masonic Lodge. Mr. Stewart's livery stable was on the southwest corner of Ninth Street and Maryland Ave., where the Western Bank now stands. It may be of interest, that Mr. Stewart was initiated into Masonry Sept. 6, 1900 by E.E. Day, Grand Master of Masons in New Mexico. The second man initiated by Sacramento Lodge. Frank Rhomberg, an early day jeweler and postmaster, was the first initiate. The Degree was conferred on Sept 6, 1900 also and was conferred by Robert White, Sacramento Lodge's First Worshipful Master.

The following is a list of Masons who signified, in writing, that they would demit from their Lodges and join the new Lodge in Alamogordo.

Robert White W. Bryden Colonel Lewis S. F. Miller

John T Hogwood F. C. Rolland George Tibbetts W. E. Warren

W. W. Ratliff R. E. Welden W. A. Hawkins G. C. Scipie

J. S. Welch

A special meeting was held April 17, 1900 and after discussion, the stationed officers were elected, though they were not a Lodge as yet. The officers elected were:

Worshipful Master Robert White

Senior Warden Colonel Lewis

Junior Warden F. C. Rolland

These officers were constituted as a committee to secure the Knights of Pythias Hall as a meeting place, when needed.

It was voter that the fees for the degrees to be set at $50.00, broken down as follows:

Entered Apprentice $25.00

Fellow Craft 15.00

Master Mason 10.00

The first meeting in the Knights of Pythias Hall was held on May 24, 1900. This hall was upstairs over 905 New York Ave. where the Mity Nice Bakery and Omega Jewelers are now. In those days the ground floor had not been partitioned and contained only one business. At the

South side of the building there was a stairway leading from New York Ave. to the second story.

A petition for a dispensation was presented and signed by:

Worshipful Master Robert White

Senior Warden Colonel Lewis

George Tibbets J. T. Hogwwod S. F. Miller

C. E. Beasly G. C. Scipie O. R. Bilbre

W. E. Warren Isaac Jackson J. S. Welch

A considerable amount of work was done on this May 24th meeting. In addition to taking care of the petition for a dispensation, a name was chosen for the new Lodge. They decided to name the new Lodge "Sacramento Lodge" after the mountains just east of Alamogordo. The Lodge voted to give each new Entered Apprentice a lambskin apron as a gift from the Lodge. A committee was appointed to secure the paraphernalia and equipment required to carry on the work of the Lodge The committee on securing the hall reported that they had secured the use of the hall on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday of each week, for $ 25.00 per month. At this time the meetings were adjourned by motion and the Worshipful Master called the next meeting by mail.

The Grand Master had written the Alamogordo Brethren that he would issue a dispensation to them as soon as W. H. Seamon, The Grand Lecturer certified to him that they were proficient in the Masonic work. On June 29,1900, the Grand Lecturer wrote that he couldn't be in Alamogordo until between July 18th and July 25th. To speed things up, the Grand Master was requested to authorize J. T. Pyle, a local Mason, to instruct the Brethren and notify the Grand Lecturer when they were proficient. Brother Pyle began his instruction on July 13, 1900, by authority of the Grand Master. Brother Pyle obviously did an excellent job because the dispensation created Sacramento Lodge, U. D. was dated July 31, 1900 only eighteen days later.

Grand Master E. E. Day was present Sept. 6, 1900, opened the Lodge and read the dispensation creating Sacramento Lodge U. D. The Grand Master then read the names of the Lodge officers and installed them. Nine petitions for the degrees were read and investigating committees appointed and Sacramento Lodge initiated its first candidates. It appears from the minutes that, by special dispensation from the Grand Master, our first two candidates were initiated the same night that their petitions were read.

Sacramento Lodge met Sept. 7, 1900, the day after it received its dispensation, for the purpose of laying two cornerstones, with Grand Master E. E. Day presiding. These cornerstones were laid at the New Mexico Baptist College and at the Public School Building of District One.

In its history, Sacramento Lodge has laid four cornerstones in public, non-Masonic buildings. Besides the two above mentioned, on Dec. 9, 1906 a cornerstone was laid at the Sanitarium, a tuberculosis hospital. The Sanitarium was built southeast of town, near the mouth of Alamo Canyon. On May 27, 1961 a cornerstone was laid at Chaparral Junior High School at 1400 College Ave., with Grand Master Ray Lofton presiding.

Of the four buildings where the Lodge laid cornerstones only Chaparrel Junior High School still remains. The Sanitarium burned in 1912 and was never rebuilt. No one knows what happened to the cornerstone. In the 1920's the building at the old Baptist College blew down in a windstorm, the school had been closed for some years. The material from the building was salvaged and sold. Almost twenty years later, on May 15, 1941 it was reported to the Lodge that the cornerstone from the Baptist College had been found in one of the city parks. It was suggested that the stone be placed on a suitable foundation before something happened to it. A committee was appointed but it was never mentioned again, and now no one knows which park the stone was in or what happened to it. Public School Building # 1 which stood at the northwest corner of Tenth St. and Vermont Ave. , was razed in 1954 and the city created the parking lot which is across the street west of the present Masonic Lodge Hall. A metal box had been placed in this stone, and the contractor who razed the building presented the box and its contents to the Lodge. Some years later, Sacramento Lodge obtained the stone from the City, and it is now in the lobby of the Lodge building. This is the only cornerstone from the three destroyed buildings which has been preserved and is on display. ( Editors Note: In 1995 the parking lot across the street was sold to the Smith Grocery Chain and they built a store on it, which in turn was sold to VanWinkles IGA in 1999. )

A set of by-laws was adopted on Sept. 20, 1900 which set the fees for the degrees at $50.00 and the annual dues at $3.00. They were also to meet every Thursday night for the rest of the year.

The Lodge, needing control of its meeting place, on Oct. 25, 1900 voted to offer the Knights of Pythias $224.76 for the furniture. The furniture was to be paid for with a six month note for $100.00 and, as Sacramento Lodge would become the lessee of the Hall, the balance of the debt would be paid by renting the hall to the Knights of Pythias for $15.00 a month. The Knights of Pythias accepted this offer on Nov. 1, 1900. On the day the Lodge made its first rent payment to O. D. Warnock, owner of the building.

Nov. 29, 1900, a resolution was adopted which raised dues from the current $3.00 to $5.00 per year.

April 11, 1901 was a date set for the delivery of the Sacramento Lodge U. D. charter, and it was arranged to give a banquet that night for the price of $1.00 per plate for members and guests.

At the meeting of March 25, 1901 the secretary was instructed to write the Lodge at White Oaks, New Mexico for a waiver of jurisdiction over an Entered Apprentice who had moved here. The Secretary was also instructed to inquire of the Grand Lodge whether there was still a Masonic Lodge at White Oaks. Horse and buggy postal service was very efficient because three days later, on March 28, 1901 a waiver of jurisdiction was received from White Oaks in favor of Thomas S. Anderson, an early day banker.

Also on March 28, 1901 the Lodge received a letter from the Alamogordo Lumber Co. stating they were contemplating furnishing electricity all night and wanted to know if all night electrical service would benefit the Lodge. On motion, the Secretary was instructed to inform the Alamogordo Lumber Co. that all night electrical service would not benefit the Lodge, present service being satisfactory.

Meeting places seemed to be quite scarce in those days because on the same day March 28, 1901 the Territorial Medical Association of New Mexico inquired if they could hold their territory wide convention in the Masonic Hall. The Hall was placed at their disposal free of charge.

April 11, 1901 with W. H. Seamon, Grand Lecturer of New Mexico, acting as Worshipful Master, Sacramento Lodge was opened and a Third Degree was conferred. Sacramento Lodge closed and Brother Seamon opened the Grand Lodge of New Mexico and invited Brother E. E. Day, Past Grand Master, to preside. A Communication from A. A. Keen, Grand Secretary, was read by which E. S. Stover, Grand Master, authorized the Grand Lecturer to consecrate and dedicate Sacramento Lodge # 24. The Secretary then read the Charter for the new Lodge. Grand Lodge was then closed and Sacramento Lodge was opened. The Secretary was instructed to cast a unanimous ballot for the Lodge Officers. Sacramento Lodge then closed and Grand Lodge re-opened. The Grand Lecturer then gave instruction in the consecration and dedication ceremony and in the ceremony for the installation of officers. Grand Lodge then closed. At 8:45 P.M. it was re-opened and, with E. E. Day, Past Grand Master presiding, Sacramento Lodge # 24 was consecrated, dedicated and the Officers were installed.

It may be of interest that, though he was Grand Lecturer of New Mexico and a member of the Masonic Lodge in Socorro, New Mexico, Brother W. H. Seamon lived in El Paso, Texas.

Also indicative of the apparent lack of meeting places in the new town, April 25, 1901 Sacramento Lodge asked for a dispensation to allow the Knight of Pythias, The Red Men, and the Odd Fellows to meet in the Masonic Lodge.

Although the Lodge was busy it seemed to be struggling financially. On June 6, 1901 it voted to borrow money to pay off all of its indebtedness.

There is some indication that, at this period, there was no mortuary in the new town. There was no mortuary mentioned in the minutes, and part of the funeral ceremony was held in the home of the deceased. The minutes reflect the Brother R. R. Reynolds, a minister who had visited the Lodge, passed away. On June 7, 1901 Sacramento Lodge # 24 opened and proceeded in funeral procession to Brother Reynold's house, where Masonic services were held. The procession then went to Grace Methodist Church, where Church services were held. Upon completion of the Church services, the procession escorted the body to the railroad depot and the remains were shipped to Woodbury, Connecticut.

Though the Lodge obviously was not in good financial shape a resolution presented by the Finance Committee which would have raised the annual dues to $15.99 was defeated on Dec. 5, 1901. Then the Brethren voted to accept a loan of $200.00, for six months without interest, from Brother D. S. Hopper.

The Knights of Pythias still held a note against the Lodge furniture. The Lodge voted to pay the note, if they had enough money in the treasury. Apparently there was enough money because the minutes never mention the note again.

Dec. 26, 1901 a special communication was called at 6:30 P.M. to confer a Third Degree. The Lodge opened at 8:30 P.M. the same evening for a regular meeting. In addition to its regular business, the Lodge conferred another Third Degree and held the election of Officers. At the time Sacramento Lodge elected the Tyler.

Dec. 27, 1901 the Officers were installed by J. R. Gilbert, a pioneer Alamogordo doctor, who was a Past Master and affiliated with Sacramento Lodge from Ranger, Texas. Although an Eastern Star Chapter had not been formed in Alamogordo yet, the ladies were invited to attend the installation of Officers. After Lodge closed, the members and guests adjourned to the Alamogordo Hotel where a banquet was served. The Alamogordo Hotel was a frame building at 400 Tenth Street where the Alamogordo Saving and Loan is now.

To show how much the Hall was used, in 1902, The Lodge requested a Grand Lodge dispensation to rent the Hall to the Brotherhood of Railroad Firemen, the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen, the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, the Order of Fraternal Brotherhood, the Select Knight and Ladies, and the Order of International Machinist and Mechanics. Later copies of the minutes in 1902 show the receipt of rent from the Knights of Pythias, Woodmen of the World and the Odd Fellows. While we are commenting on the Grand Lodge issuing dispensations for the organizations to use the Masonic Hall, on Jan. 21, 1904 the Grand Lodge refused to grant a dispensation for Sacramento Lodge to rent its hall to the Catholic Church.

May 1, 1902 the Lodge voted to allow the Order of The Eastern Star to use the hall on the first and third Thursdays of each month. Then, on Nov. 13, 1902, Sacramento Lodge set its regular communication on the third Thursday of each month and instructed the Secretary to inform the Eastern Star of this decision.

The Lodge formed in funeral procession on Dec. 31, 1902 and marched to the home of a deceased Brother, who was a member of Kingston Lodge # 16, where they conducted funeral services. It seems a little unusual, but Sacramento Lodge paid the expenses of shipping the body to Las Cruces.

Our Brethren of an earlier era had pretty strong ideas of how a Mason should act out of the Lodge. As an illustration, on Nov. 19, 1903 charges were brought against two members for gambling and excessive drinking. One member was tried and his punishment was to be conducted to the Alter and receive a reprimand from the Master. Charges were dropped against the other member. On July 13, 1905 the same charges were brought against the same two members and both were expelled for un-Masonic conduct.

Sacramento Lodge held two Masonic Trials in 1905. On Oct. 12, 1905 a member requested a demit and there were objections to granting the demit. The Granting of the demit was delayed. On Nov 9, 1905 he was charged with taking money from his employer on two separate occasions and at another time he had stolen a piece of jewelry from his employer. On Dec. 8, 1905 he was found guilty of stealing the jewelry and part of the money and was suspended indefinitely.

Feb. 8, 1906 the Lodge ordered a projector and slides for the First and Third Degree Lecture, in the Minutes it is referred to as a lantern and views. With this projector the lecture became a two-man operation, the man who gave the lecture and the man, usually the Secretary, who changed the slides. The Lecturer carried the Senior Deacon's rod, and one tap on the floor with the rod was a signal to change to the next slide. This projector was used until May 20, 1948 when a projector and two filmstrips were ordered. The old projector and slides are stored in the Masonic paraphernalia room, and both are in excellent condition. It is gratifying that this souvenir of by-gone days, almost as old as the Lodge itself, was never given away or thrown out. ( This lantern and views were demonstrated, by R:.W:.B:. Carroll Sorenson, at Past Masters night in 1985).

In the latter part of 1907, the Lodge began to show signs of desiring to move to a new location and, at a special meeting on April 23, 1908 the building committee read an offer from G. W. Wolfinger. Mr. Wolfinger offered the Lodge a five year lease of the upper floor of the so-called Knights of Pythias building for $40.00 a month, and he would make an allowance of $110.00 for any needed repairs. The Lodge voted to accept Mr. Wolfingers offer. This building is at 900 New York Ave. and the Wolfinger Dry Goods Store was on the ground floor. Robert's Ladies Apparel now occupies the site of the old Wolfinger Dry Good Store.

April 29, 1908 a meeting was called to confer a Third Degree and to discuss business pertaining to the new hall. It was moved not to sub-let the new hall to other organizations and to ask for a Grand Lodge dispensation to move to the new hall. The move was probably made in May of 1908 because at the June meeting a bill from a drayman was approved, although Nov. 5, 1908 is the first time that rent to Wolfinger is specifically mentioned in the bills.

Sept. 10, 1908 a letter was received from Carrizozo stating that a Masonic Lodge was to be started there. The Secretary was instructed to inform them that it met with Sacramento Lodge's hearty approval.

At the meeting on Dec. 19, 1912 a committee was appointed to see if they could get a reduction in the rent and if no rent reduction could be obtained, to try to locate another hall. On Feb. 20, 1913 Brother C. E. Mitchell offered to rent the top floor of the First National Bank Building to the Lodge for $30.00 a month, with sub-letting privileges, and to change the room as The Lodge desired. The Lodge voted to offer Mr. Wolfinger $20.00 per month rent on their present Lodge room and if Mr. Wolfinger refused then the Lodge would accept Brother Mitchell's offer.

March 20, 1913, a letter from Mr. Wolfinger was read in which he agreed to lower the rent to $20.00 per month, but at the same meeting the Building Committee reported that they had already rented the upper floor of the Bank for $30.00 a month and had contracted with the Knights of Pythias and the Odd Fellows to rent the hall for $15,00 per month each. Though some members voted to stay in the same hall, the majority supported the Building Committee's action, and a Committee was appointed to take care of moving and the necessary construction work in the new hall. Moving and remodeling bills were allowed at the June 12th meeting so it seems safe to assume that the Lodge moved to the First National Bank Building in May or early June of 1913. This building is at the southeast corner of Tenth Street and New York Ave. and was later purchased by Sacramento Lodge. The upper story, where the Lodge held its meeting for about fifty years, was removed after the Lodge sold the property.

Some Tularosa Masons requested a waiver of jurisdiction on March 4, 1915 so that they might institute a Masonic Lodge in Tularosa.

The Grand Master, A. D. Goldenberg, visited Sacramento Lodge on Nov. 24, 1919 and presented some proposed changes to the Grand Lodge by-laws. Among the revisions approved by the Lodge were: that each member be charged $2.00 a year for a Masonic Home Fund, that Grand Lodge per capita tax be raised to $1.50 a year and that the Grand Secretary's Salary be set at $3,600.00 per year.

March 4, 1920 the Lodge entered into a one-year lease agreement with the Alamo State Bank for $50.00 per month. Prior to this time the Lodge's landlord had been the First National Bank. It is not stated how this change in ownership of the building took place. The $20.00 per month raise in rent seemed to impose a financial strain on the Lodge because in April a committee was appointed to investigate raising the dues and in Sept. all life members were notified that they would be expected to start paying their own Grand Lodge per capita tax.

Also, 1920 seemed to be the first year that the Tyler was not elected.

In 1921 our first membership roster was compiled, and it included the Chapter and Commandery.

At the Dec. 8, 1921 meeting a letter was read from the Grand Master concerning a donation to the Sojourner's Club at Ft. Bayard, New Mexico. It was voted that the Lodge forego a banquet at the installation of Officers and send $25.00 to the Sojourner's Club. At the same meeting it was voted to consult the Eastern Star's and Masonic bodies regarding a public installation and a "feed". It doesn't make much sense unless a banquet was served by professionals and what is now known as a covered-dish supper was called a feed.

The first time Sacramento Lodge gave a Past Masters jewel was Dec. 28, 1922 when the Lodge voted to give Tom Charles, the Junior Past Master, the jewel of his choice.

Feb. 1, 1923 a committee was appointed to locate our Past Masters pictures and hang them in the hall.

In 1924 the Lodge began the process of buying the building in which it was meeting. On May 3, 1924 the building committee reported that $2,100.00 had been subscribed, as loans, for the purpose of buying the building. A committee was appointed with full authority to act in the Lodge's behalf in this purchase. On May 15, 1924 a committee, consisting of three Brothers elected to staggered terms of three, two and one year each, was elected to serve as trustees for the building. On Feb. 5, 1925 the building Fund Trustees reported that the building had been bought by contract for $9,050.00. The Alamogordo Improvement Company's records show that the property was transferred from L. R. Hughes and wife to Sacramento Lodge # 24 in March 1928. As has been said before, this building is at the southeast corner of Tenth St. and New York Ave.

The Lodge held its Twenty Fifth Anniversary Celebration on Oct. 29, 1925. On the program, three charter members of the Lodge, F. C. Rolland, S. F. Miller, and C. E. Beasley spoke about the early days of the Lodge. Only Brother F. C. Rolland survived to speak at the Lodge's Fiftieth Anniversary program.

Feb. 28, 1928 R. L, Hood, a railroad man who worked in the Orogrande area, received his Third Degree. The meeting was attended by members of the Southern Pacific Square and Compasses Club of El Paso, as well as by Masons from Tularosa and Carrizozo. A meal was served to the out-of-town visitors at 6:00 P.M., and a light lunch was served to all after Lodge closed, with ninety-eight members attending.

Jan. 20, 1929 it was voted that the Secretary do what was necessary to change the Lodge by-laws so that the regular meeting would be held on the second Thursday of each month instead of on the Thursday on or before the full moon.

June 20, 1929 a donation was sent to Sierra Grande Lodge # 57 at Des Moines, New Mexico, who had lost their Lodge Hall in a fire on April 22, 1929.

March 9, 1930 Sacramento Lodge conducted a funeral for Brother E. F. Funk, the Worshipful Master of Silver City Lodge. Brother Funk had taught school in Alamogordo and had been a frequent visitor to the Lodge while he lived in Alamogordo. A funeral procession met the body at the railroad depot and accompanied it to the First Baptist Church where church services were held. The procession then accompanied the remains to the cemetery where Sacramento Lodge conducted Masonic funeral services.

Dec. 6, 1930 Union Lodge # 4 sent the Lodge ten dance tickets at $1.50 each to help refurbish their Lodge Hall which had been destroyed by a cyclone in May. Sacramento Lodge obligated by sending the $15.00.

Things were not expensive in 1933, On Feb. 11th, District Institute was held in Alamogordo, with Carrizozo and Tularosa attending, and a turkey dinner was served for $.50 a plate. Somewhere along the line District Institute became Masonic Workshops. Monitors sold for $.75. On April 20, 1933 three Brothers attended Grand Lodge in Roswell and submitted a bill to the Lodge amounting to $20.00 for sustenance, shelter and conveyance.

Thomas Hall, Grand Master, sent a letter on March 16, 1933 containing a tribute to Alpheus A. Keen for his fifty years as Grand Secretary.

There were no meetings in June or July of 1933 due to the lack of a quorum.

The minutes stated that there was no meeting June 21, 1934 due to a lack of a quorum. There are no further minutes until Oct. 18, 1934. The Lodge apparently didn't meet for five consecutive months. This is not explained.

Rainbow Assembly # 18 invited the Lodge to attend a covered dish supper and witness the presentation of their charter on June 16, 1936.

The Lodge received a letter on Nov. 18, 1937 from the Master of Tularosa Lodge inviting all members, families and escorts to the official visit of A. L. Hamilton, Grand Master, to Alamogordo, Tularosa and Carrizozo Lodges. It was to be an open meeting held at the Tularosa Women's Club building, with a dance following the program. Sacramento lodge voted to pay the admission of $.75 each for three Rainbow Girls and one Eastern Star member who were on the program.

A Brother petitioned the Lodge for affiliation orally, on March 16, 1939, because he had misplaced his written petition. The petition was excepted with instructions that his written petition was to be handed to the Secretary the next day.

May 18, 1939 it was voted that the Lodge allow $12.50 on the purchase of a Past Master's Jewel. Past Masters desiring a more expensive jewel would be required to pay the difference.

At each regular Lodge meeting in 1939, a Brother was appointed to attend the next two meetings of Rainbow Assembly # 18 thus assuring that a Mason would be present at every Rainbow meeting. Also, in 1939, a correspondent to the New Mexico Freemason was appointed.

Oscar E. L. Newman, the only member of Sacramento Lodge # 24 elected Grand Master of Masons in New Mexico, in its first Century, petitioned the Lodge for affiliation on Dec. 18, 1941. Oscar was elected Jan. 15, 1942 and passed his Third Degree proficiency Feb. 19, 1942.

A resolution raising the initiation fees to $102.00 was adopted on Oct. 21, 1954. M:.W:.B:. C. Roy Smith, Grand Master approved the resolution on Nov. 5, 1954

Oct. 20, 1955 the property at 1100 Vermont Ave. was bought for $11,000.00.

As the City of Alamogordo grew, they realized that they needed a real airport instead of the bare strip of ground, north of town, where planes were permitted to land. On March 20, 1958 the City of Alamogordo offered to trade land to Sacramento Lodge for the 320 acres owned by the Lodge south of the City, the City needed this land as part of the proposed airport. The City offered the Lodge their choice of three plots for the land owned by the Lodge.
